MARY MUKUNDI- COSTUME MANAGER OF THE MONTH

Mary Mukundi is a freelance Photographer and filmmaker. Having been in the industry for about three years now, the 26-year-old has manoeuvred her way up in the jammed film industry through hard work, passion and hunger to be better.
Starting off as Set Runner, she’s now an avid Costume Designer. She has worked with/for Historia Films Kenya (the Film Company behind the popular comedy movies; House of Lungula and Fundi-metals) in making several AMOF movies, the likes of Blind Fame, Run-away Groom, Oyundi, Flowers and Bricks, to mention but a few, all airing on the Maisha Magic Channel.
She was the Costume Designer in the new TV Series by Historia Films; News Just In, which has at least two seasons now.
Her love for film has led Mary to volunteer in making short films and documentaries with Turning Tables Kenya; a Non-Governmental Organization that empowers marginalized youths globally by providing a means to express themselves through music and film.
Recently, Mary Mukundi was part of the production team; that made a film based on a true story that happened couple years ago in Kenya, the film production was headed by German Students from Hamburg Media School. On this particular set, she was not only the Costume Designer but also a part of the Production Design team.
Besides, films and TV Series, she has been involved in a TV Commercial shoot on Fish Consumption Awareness with the Cultural Video Foundation; CVF – is a community media organization whose mission is to use journalism and multimedia products to inform, educate, and mobilize social development.
Unlike many film-makers, Mary did not study film making in school, her passion and interest for film has gained her the knowledge and skills on set. To her, every set is a learning platform. However, she has a Diploma in Public Relations from the University of Nairobi hence her good work relations and ethics.
In 2015, she joined other young filmmakers in a workshop; Sema Youth Film Festival to nurture her skills in camera, yes, in a few years, Mary aims at becoming a skillful Cinematographer. The same year, working under The Art Department, Mary worked closely with the Directors of Udada Film Festival; a women film festival that features film by/about women.
“I try to live my life where I end up at a point where I have no regrets. So I try to choose the road that I have the most passion on because then you can never really blame yourself for making the wrong choices. You can always say you’re following your passion.” Mary’s favorite quote.
